Prof Thierry Burnouf

Thierry Burnouf, PhD, is currently the Vice-Dean, Professor, and Director of the International
PhD Program in Biomedical Engineering at the College of Biomedical Engineering, Taipei
Medical University, Taipei, Taiwan.
Previously Dr Burnouf has been the Director of Research and Development and Production
Director of the plasma fractionation center at the Regional Blood Transfusion Center (Lille,
France) and the Scientific Director of LFB (Laboratoire Français du Fractionnement et des
Biotechnologies, Les Ulis, France).
He has been closely involved into the development and industrial implementation of new
plasma fractionation technologies and virus inactivation and removal procedures. He also
provided assistance in feasibility studies of contract and domestic plasma fractionation
Dr. Burnouf has been a WHO temporary advisor and consultant for the drafting of several
Guidelines/Recommendations on (a) “viral inactivation and removal procedures intended to
assure the viral safety of human blood plasma products”, (b) “production, quality control and regulation of plasma for fractionation”, (c) “GMP in blood establishments”, as well as a report on “Improving access to safe blood products through local production and technology transfer in blood establishments, various “Aide-Memoires” on contract plasma fractionation program and safety of blood products.
He has also been involved into the development of virus inactivation technologies for
cryoprecipitate and plasma for developing economies.
He is a member of working parties on “Cellular therapies” and “Global Blood Safety” for the
International Society of Blood Transfusion.
Dr. Burnouf has published over 230 articles and book chapters related to plasma fractionation and blood products.
His current field of research interest focuses on bioengineering and bioprocessing of virally-safe human platelet growth factor preparations and blood cell-derived extracellular vesicles for regenerative medicine and cell therapy.
